Mother's Day

Every day we are surrounded by mothers. They are not always easily recognizable. That is because what makes a mother is the millions of moments that you don’t see. It begins the moment you find someone you put before yourself. Moments of sacrifice cradling a sick child or holding a dying hand. The moment you wake up and forget to eat breakfast but remember the homework, lunch boxes, permission slips and clean underwear. Mothers are made in the moments when you don’t sleep. You don’t sleep because he isn’t home and the night seems too dark without him. You don’t sleep because the baby needs you. You don’t sleep because her bed is empty and it is past curfew without a phone call and you were her age once too. Mothers are made in moments filled with kisses of all shapes and sliminess levels and moments filled with hugs to heal the hurts of the world. You can’t identify a mother by the kids in the shopping cart because the truth is they were a mother before the babies came and will be one long after they are gone on to be parents to babies of their own. Mothers are millions of moments. And someday when those millions of moments have filled all they can of a mother and the last of them have past all that will be left is love, love that will be carried on in the hearts all that you have touched and shared in millions of moments of their own. Everyday, we are surround by women filled with moments that are bits of what it is to be a mother. To each of them I wish a happy Mothers Day.
